Hu Chao is an art historian, curator and cultural writer whose work develops through the historical connections and contemporary relationships between China and Southeast Asia. He is a Research Associate Professor at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and holds a PhD from the Central Academy of Fine Arts.
胡超是艺术史学者、策展人与文化写作者,广州美术学院新美术馆学研究中心副研究员、中央美术学院博士。他的研究与写作建立在中国与东南亚之间的跨区域视角之上,关注艺术与历史、政治、社会结构之间的关系。
His research begins with images, objects, spaces and institutions. Nanyang woodcuts and the movements of artists across the region offer a way to rethink modern art through exchanges within Asia. Museum and exhibition histories provide another route into the relationship between cultural memory, national identity and the organisation of knowledge.
他较早从中国与东南亚相互关联的艺术史视野提出并推进“南洋木刻”研究,并依托艺术家的流动与迁徙,探索亚洲现代艺术的跨境联系与在地生成。他进一步将研究拓展至跨区域艺术交流、展览与机构网络,同时长期关注美术馆与博物馆如何参与文化记忆、国家身份和知识生产。
He is the author of Constructing National Identity: National Museums and Galleries of Singapore, 1965–2015, published in Chinese by Guangxi Normal University Press. His work on artist residencies considers the studios, hosts and support networks through which contemporary art develops across borders.
著有《国民身份的建构:新加坡的国家博物馆和美术馆》,由广西师范大学出版社出版。他关于艺术驻留计划的研究,考察工作室、东道主与支持网络如何参与中国当代艺术的发展与跨国交流。
Curating and writing are connected forms of inquiry in his practice. Recent exhibitions include Bali Island: Art and the World Beyond the Rainforest at GAFA Art Museum, co-curated with Lim Chengtju, and Origins of Artist Residencies in China: Another Pathway to Contemporary Chinese Art (“Borrowing the Shell”) at Red Gate Gallery in Beijing, co-curated with Brian Wallace.

His public writing brings visual culture and historical research to contemporary questions, from Hong Kong’s borders and cinema to the representation of military power and the terms used to describe Southeast Asia. His essays appear in the South China Morning Post, Asia Times, Times Higher Education and the Critical Asian Studies Commentary Board.
他的公共写作从视觉文化与历史研究进入当代问题,涉及香港的边界与电影、军事力量的视觉呈现,以及描述东南亚的概念与话语。文章发表于《南华早报》《亚洲时报》《泰晤士高等教育》与Critical Asian Studies Commentary Board等平台。

His academic background also includes a Bachelor of Arts from Hubei University and an MBA from INSEAD. He was selected for the Reuters Foundation Fellowship Programme at Oxford University and was a Visiting Scholar in Global Art & Politics at the University of Southampton. These experiences inform an interdisciplinary approach to art, institutions and communication.
他的教育背景还包括湖北大学文学士和INSEAD工商管理硕士。他曾入选牛津大学 Reuters Foundation Fellowship Programme,并在南安普顿大学全球艺术与政治领域担任访问学者。这些经历构成了他研究艺术、机构与传播关系的跨学科基础。
He edited the 2024 New Museum Studies special issue on “Art Museums and the Global South.” His teaching includes global contemporary art since the 1990s, from YBA to multipolar narratives, and Southeast Asian visual culture and knowledge.
担任《新美术馆学》“全球南方与美术馆”专题主编(2024)。教学包括《九十年代以来的全球当代艺术:从YBA运动到多极化叙事》,以及《知识与图像》之“东南亚图像与知识”。
